Hope you all had a great New Years Eve! I made Surprise Buns for my family yesterday and my daughter and grandkids came over.
What are Surprise Buns?
You fry hamburger meat, (about 1 1/2 lbs.) with some cut up onion until brown, and drain the fat. (I get my hamburger from Costco, hardly any fat). Then you add salt a pepper to taste and shredded up cabbage. (you can buy the cabbage all shredded for you, or shred it yourself). You continue to cook on low until the cabbage is limp or cooked. It won't take long.
In the mean time you have to prepare your dough. I usually use Pillsbury's Hot Roll Mix. Follow the directions on the box and after they rise for about 5 minutes then you can roll the dough out and cut into squares. Add a tablespoon or so of the hamburger mixture (depends on how big your squares are, mine are all different sizes, depending on how the dough rolls out and then fold up opposite corners and pinch together. Lay them on a greased cookie sheet and let rise for a few minutes. Then bake them at 350 degrees for about 15-20 minutes.

They are simple to do, but take a bit of time. I usually have a salad with the buns. One thing nice is you get all the mess cleaned up by the time your Surprise buns are out of the oven.
My Mom used to make these for my sister and I once in a while. We loved them as kids and still do. This was the first time my grandkids had them and they loved them as well. Growing up we put butter on the top of each bun as we were eating them. My daughter likes to dip hers into ranch dressing, me, not so much!
Ok, now to get to my "sneak peak" for SAB (sale-a-bration).
I'm still stuck on the new embossing folder called Framed Tulips, (page 28 of the Occasions mini). This was done on a Perfect Plum base card. You know, I haven't used this color in forever, but I love it with Marina Mist. Thanks to my "Color Coach", (you can find it on page 165 of the big catalog. I'm finding I use this tool a lot),this is how I found out what colors to use with the Perfect Plum.
The Scallop with the flowers is from Punch Bunch (page 5 of SAB catalog). I used markers to color the image and stamped on Whisper White and punched it out with the scallop punch. The three flowers on the right are from Button, Button stamp set, (page 34 of the Occasions mini), I stamped them 3 times in Marina Mist and cut them out. Added a button and some linen thread to the middle one. Popped all three of them with dimensionals. Added some Whisper White Organza ribbon and popped up the scallop too.

Cindee - your recipe sounds so yummy! Out here in Nebraska we have a fast food restaraunt chain called "Runza" and they sell these! They have different kinds: with cheese, swiss mushroom, itailan, plain etc. It is a very popular place! Have a great 2011 and love your blog ideas.
Yum...I bet those surprise buns would be good with chicken and rice too. Thanks for the SAB sneak peek.. CUTE!
Right On for the RANCH DRESSING!! I always knew I liked her! LOL :) Do you think that would work with the "poppin' fresh" type rolls ? I think it might...
Happpy New Year, Cindee!!
