Every New Years Eve, I make Surprise Buns. My Mom used to make these for my sister and I. They are so easy, but take a while to make, because the dough needs to rise.
Start out with Hot Roll Mix (or any bread dough).
Mix according to directions on box. Then while the dough is rising you fry up some hamburger, onion. Drain, salt and pepper and then added the shredded cabbage. Let the cabbage wilt by covering and heating on low.
This is what the meat mixture should look like.
Roll out your dough and cut into about 4 inch squares, add meat mixture into center and then fold opposite corners and pinch in the center.
Set them on a cookie sheet and let rise again, then bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes or until brown. I forgot to take a photo of the finished ones......darn it.
Make sure you cover them with a dish towel to keep them warm until its time to bake. We had a fruit salad and Cesar salad with our Surprise Buns. We always butter the buns before we eat them. My daughter likes to use Ranch Dressing instead of butter. My SIL uses Ketchup, but then he uses Ketchup on EVERYTHING!
When our kids were still at home, my husband made cinnamon rolls for dessert. Can you say, YUMMY?
Talk about crazy people, try living in Pasadena. LOL These sound really good. I think I will have to try them.

Being from Nebraska where there is a large German population, they call these cabbage burgers or "runza". I love them and I think it is awesome they are part of your holiday routine.
ReplyDeleteYeah for Jen for dipping them in Ranch! Gotta love her! :) Patty
ReplyDeleteCindee - I am also from Nebraska and we have Runza resturants that sell these! They ARE yummy!! We put cheese in ours along with the hamburger and cabbage. Happy New year to you!!
ReplyDeleteThis is funny! This is the same recipe that my Mom used when we were kids, too. Except we called them Kraut Burgers! I'm from Nebraska and I love these so much better than Runza....homemade means they are meatier. Thanks for sharing your tradition. Oh, BTW, I dip mine in ketchup, too! ;)
ReplyDeleteJust watched something on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives and one of the places made these and DH and I were saying they looked good. Think I am gonna have to try making some. Only difference was they added a little homemade sauerkraut to the mixture as well. So glad to see someone makes them without that, as I would have left it out myself. TFS!

Thanks for sharing - the community I grew up in in NW Iowa had a Dutch bakery. Runza was a big item on their menu.
